What is Clearing: A Guide

Is Clearing for me?

You may not have a university place because:

  • you applied to UCAS after June 30

  • your chosen uni hasn’t confirmed your choice

  • you didn’t get the exam results you needed

  • you got better exam results than expected and are reconsidering your options

  • you changed your mind about your firm accept, or decided to go to university after all

Clearing is the service that can help you find the right course for you.

Can I do anything to prepare for Clearing?

You can help prepare for a smoother Clearing experience by putting a plan B in place before A-Level results day, Thursday 13 August. Pick a few courses and universities you think would be right for you. Remember to consider points like accommodationlocation and finance in your decision.

Clearing opens on July 6, so if you already have qualifications and have made a last-minute decision to go to university this year, or are receiving SQA results on August 4, then you can go through Clearing sooner.

Results Day

If you got the results you needed and your firm choice is confirmed, that’s great. If not, keep calm and get Clearing

Clearing happy

Clearing step by step

  1. Talk to careers advisers, teachers, tutors, anyone who may have ideas about alternative courses they think would suit you.

  1. Check the vacancy listings on ucas.com. If the courses you scoped out aren’t there, maybe consider a different degree. The course you wanted could even become available later in the day.

  1. Talk to the universities you’d like to study at in person and have all your information to hand. You may receive several informal offers in this way. Don’t panic or rush to accept. Research the courses, universities, accommodation and local areas online before you decide.

  1. When you’ve picked the course for you from those universities who’ve said they’ll accept you, from 3pm you can click ‘add Clearing choice’ in UCAS Track. If the uni confirms, it will show as an acceptance on your ‘Choices’ page in Track – job done, you’re going to uni

  1. If the uni doesn’t confirm your place, you can add another choice in Track and repeat the process until you find the right place for you
