Top 5 Netflix Shows to Watch During Lockdown

With the UK on lockdown and our lives confined to our homes and the internet, it’s important to make sure there’s plenty to keep you occupied. Streaming services like Netflix can be great for this (in between studying, of course) but if you’re anything like us, you can spend as long trying to find something to watch as you do actually watching something.

That’s why we took to Instagram to ask our students and followers what they’d recommend for perfect lockdown viewing. We got loads of suggestions, but some cropped up more than others... here are the top 5:

Sex Education

One of my absolute favourite suggestions from this list – I just wish this existed when I was an awkward teenager!

The perfect blend of humour, coming-of-age drama, wholesome heartfelt moments and scenes you’re uncomfortable watching with your mother, the show isn’t just utterly watchable, it really is an education. And Gillian Anderson is in it, so you know it must be good.

True crime addict? Ever wanted to know how a serial killer’s mind works? This show is the one for you – following FBI agents interviewing serial killers to try and understand how they think, the show includes portrayals of real serial killers from the 70s and 80s, with characters loosely based on real agents. There’s only two seasons, with discussions of a third put on hold, but with a 97% approval rating on RottenTomatoes you shouldn’t be surprised if you find it addictive.

Stranger Things

If you haven’t heard of Stranger Things yet, where have you been? The show follows the adventures of some 12 year old kids as one of their friends mysteriously goes missing. Supernatural elements and mystery meet dungeons and dragons and 80’s nostalgia for an instant cult classic. There are three seasons so far, but a fourth is in the works, so when you binge watch it all in a week, you can rest assured that next year it’ll be back!

RuPaul’s Drag Race

Think ‘Next Top Model’ style reality TV meets drag queens – RuPaul's Drag Race has gone from a cult show in the LGBT+ community to an internationally renowned, multi-award-winning hit that’s brought drag culture into the mainstream. Hilarious, entertaining, awe-inspiring and occasionally heart-warming, there are 12 seasons on Netflix so there’s plenty to keep you going during lockdown. Plus, last year saw the very first UK version of the show, with guest judges like Geri Halliwell, Maisie Williams and Cheryl – and you can find that on BBC iPlayer.

Money Heist

La Casa de Papel (or Money Heist), is a Spanish drama which, unsurprisingly, focuses on a heist – where a group of robbers break into the Royal Mint of Spain to print their own money. It’s also a smash hit, quickly becoming the most watched foreign-language original series Netflix ever produced back in 2018. Loved for the sophisticated plot and the character drama, it’s been dubbed into English for those of us who don’t speak Spanish, so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of the subtitles.

So what about the rest? We had a lot of responses, but we’ve cherry-picked a few of our personal favourites from the pile...
