8 reasons to visit an open day

Choosing a university is a huge decision, but there are plenty of ways to help decide. Open days being one of them. Whether it’s your first degree or your venturing back into education at a postgrad level open day events are a great opportunity to get a taste of uni life before you commit to going.

Take a look at our top reasons why you should visit one…

Find out more about courses and the uni

You’ve read the prospectus, searched the website, and you’re pretty sure you’ve found the course you want to do. It’s always a good idea to come along to an open day and see in person what the uni and courses are like. It’ll help you get a feel for the place before you commit!

Visit departments

See the environment you’ll be learning in - go to a couple of subject talks and get a feel for the department. Find out about how the department teaches and whether it will suit you as a learner.

Meet your future lecturers

Get to know the teaching staff before you enrol. By asking questions about the course, you’ll also get a feel for how they will be as a teacher and mentor.

Talk to current students

Who best to find out about the uni from, than current students? They’ll be on hand throughout the day giving tours and honest answers about what it’s like to study there, what the nightlife is like and their experience.

Check out the facilities

When you’ve got a deadline due, you’re going to want to make the most of what the uni has to offer. Whether that’s the library, computers or maybe course-specific facilities like TV studios, laboratories or healthcare clinics.

Peek at the accommodation

While you’re there, take a look at the accommodation available. You’ll be able to see how close it is to campus, where the nearest shop is and other useful bits and bobs essential for when you move.

Scope the local area

Are you in the city centre or out in the countryside? What are the transport links like? Open days are a good opportunity to take a walk around the local area, pop into shops and bars and get a feel for what life will be like outside of lectures.

See what support is available

It’s not just lecturers that are on hand during open days. Support service staff will also be around to speak to if you think you’ll need any extra support during your time at uni. Find out how they can help with study skills, disability, careers and much more.

Psst! Our next open day is on Saturday 18 August, you can book your place now by completing this form

See you there!
