What you will study

YEAR 1 (LEVEL 6)

The top-up year will focus on professional development and introduce students to research methods and skills. To this end, students will become familiar with research in therapeutic childcare and related subjects from a historical perspective and the current agenda. It will enable students to learn how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to research in therapeutic childcare. Students will select and carry out a small-scale research project related to their work role or setting.

Entry requirements & applying

  • Applicants should possess FdA Therapeutic Child Care or equivalent
  • It is expected that all students joining the programme will either be in current practice with children and young people or have substantial recent experience of such practice (at least two years within the last five years)
  • You must also be able to negotiate time away from your workplace to attend lectures (approximately twelve days each academic year)
  • You must have access to a computer and internet connection
  • All candidates will be interviewed.

Teaching & Assessment

Students are assessed in a variety of ways during their degree, from individual tutorials, group criticism, peer assessment and presentation of final artwork. Feedback is individually tailored to help you develop your artwork to a professional standard.

Teaching and Learning

You will get lots of support especially as you start to develop the skills needed to complete assessments. Feedback will be given during and after each assessment to help you build a variety of academic and practical writing skills.

To add flexibility, a large part of this course is taught online.

After successful completion of the FdA students often gain promotion within their organisation. Some students go on to complete top-up their FdA to a full BA (Hons) Therapeutic Child Care.
