Year 1 (Level 6)
The top-up year will focus on professional development and introduce students to research methods and skills. To this end, students will become familiar with research in therapeutic childcare and related subjects from a historical perspective and the current agenda. It will enable students to learn how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to research in therapeutic childcare. Students will select and carry out a small-scale research project related to their work role or setting.

The information listed in this section is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal academic framework review, so may be subject to change.
Applicants should possess FdA Therapeutic Child Care or equivalent.
It is expected that all students joining the programme will either be in current practice with children and young people or have substantial recent experience of such practice (at least two years within the last five years).
You must also be able to negotiate time away from your workplace to attend lectures (approximately twelve days each academic year).
You must have access to a computer and internet connection.
All candidates will be interviewed.
All assessments are based on your academic study and from gathering information in the workplace. You are assessed in a variety of ways throughout the top up year, including, essays, portfolio development and presentations.
Teaching and learning
Wrexham Glyndŵr University is committed to supporting our students to maximise their academic potential.
We offer workshops and support sessions in areas such as academic writing, effective note-making and preparing for assignments. Students can book appointments with academic skills tutors dedicated to helping deal with the practicalities of university work. You will get lots of support and feedback will be given during and after each assessment to help you build a variety of academic and practical writing skills. In addition you will have the opportunity to make use of a supervision relationship to support the process of research.
Our Careers and Employability service is there to help you make decisions and plan the next steps towards a bright future. From finding work or further study to working out your interests, skills and aspirations, they can provide you with the expert information, advice and guidance you need.
Careers open to graduates of this degree include working with children in residential homes and schools, as well as in foster care and family support work. Graduates have gained promotion within their organisations and accessed postgraduate programmes in teaching, play therapy and social work.
You do not have to pay your tuition fees upfront.
Wrexham Glyndŵr University’s tuition fees for 2020/21 for BA Therapeutic Childcare top-up are £3000.
