Entry criteria for admission to the BSc top up routes are:
Diploma of Higher Education Counselling from Glyndŵr, OR an initially qualifying Diploma from another provider. Diplomas in Counselling from other providers such as FE or Private providers may be accepted provided that the applicant has also passed the BACP Certificate of Proficiency and is therefore eligible to be (and is) a full member of BACP (MBACP) since this confers professional qualification registered status.
If the initial qualification is not at Level 5 then evidence of ability to study at Level 6 will be required. This may be evidenced through the applicant having another prior degree or other Level 6 qualification, or through a written exercise task set and marked at level 6 criteria and assessed by the programme team.
For clarity candidates who hold an initial appropriate qualification in counselling adults (from Glyndŵr or other providers) MAY be admitted to the BSc (Hons) Counselling (Children and Young People), or the BSc Counselling (Adults).
In all cases the applicant will need to evidence having a relevant setting (employment or voluntary) counselling children and young people, if taking the BSc Counselling (Children and Young People), and counselling adults if taking the BSc Counselling (Adults). This ensures that skills learned during the BSc programme may be applied in practice; additionally practice research can be appropriately undertaken. This requirement will be determined through the interview process where applicants will evidence employer/placement provider approval.
Entry will be decided based on a review of the application form including personal statement and an interview involving 2 members of the Counselling Team.
Applicants will require a DBS check and Occupational Health check if these have not already been completed as part of their studies at Wrexham Glyndŵr University
Applicants should apply using this form.
Assessment includes presentations, essays, case studies and practice based research dissertation.
Teaching and learning
Wrexham Glyndŵr University is committed to supporting our students to maximise their academic potential.
We offer workshops and support sessions in areas such as academic writing, effective note-making and preparing for assignments. Students can book appointments with academic skills tutors dedicated to helping deal with the practicalities of university work. Our student support section has more information on the help available.
Our Careers & Employability service is there to help you make decisions and plan the next steps towards a bright future. From finding work or further study to working out your interests, skills and aspirations, they can provide you with the expert information, advice and guidance you need.
Counselling and psychotherapy are personally and professionally challenging. However, the National Strategy for School-based Counselling Services in Wales has increased demand for appropriately trained counsellors within schools.
Our graduates have secured employment in high schools and within the charitable sector providing counselling in schools following successful completion of the course. Many people build up their career gradually, and develop a ‘Portfolio’ career, which enables them to make use of a wide range of experiences and skills to work flexibly in the way that suits them most.
Government policy in Wales and England continues to recognise the increasing need for mental health services specifically for children and young people. Gaining this qualification will give you the additional specialist skills to apply to work in this field.
You do not have to pay your tuition fees upfront.
Wrexham Glyndŵr University’s tuition fees for 2020/21 for a full-time undergraduate degree course are £9000 per year.
The fees you pay and the support available will depend on a number of different factors. Full information can be found on our fees & finance pages. You will also find information about what your fees include in the FAQs section of those pages.
