HND Graphic Design
I currently run two businesses. I run a small graphics design consultancy called Copper Blue Creative with my husband, who also studied the same course at Wrexham Glyndwr with me. I also run a different creative business, All Round Creative Junkie, which covers upcycling workshops, presenting how-to videos on painting furniture and writing a blog. I rarely sleep!
I worked in house at Northumbria University for 14 years and winning a HEIST marketing award for Best Prospectus Design 2 years running was a highlight. I then took the plunge to quit my job and work for myself and recently won the North East Blogger of the Year award for my creative blog, and worked on national campaigns for upcycling with Gumtree and Rust-Oleum paints.
I chose Wrexham Glyndwr primarily due to the great reputation it had as an art college, several people had moved from my foundation course to Wrexham, so word of mouth played a big part. I also wanted to leave home in Durham and have the full university experience of living away. However, although I was ready to leave home I wasn't sure of a big city so Wrexham was a great step for me.
The course was in a studio environment with experienced lecturers and external lecturers who worked in the industry working with us part time. We also explored other aspects of graphic design such as photography skills and print techniques which helped massively. Being a graphic designer isn't just about one discipline, it’s about knowing all aspects of design.
For me, it was about discovering there were other people out there that liked design and art and I wasn't an outsider anymore. I gained a huge amount of confidence and knowledge about all aspects of design, I lived with others who studied illustration, film and AV studies, photography and I think that really made me who I am today.
Anyone considering working in a similar field, be prepared to get as much work experience as you can and soak up anything creative around you. There is inspiration everywhere for designers, you just need to start on a course with great lecturers who can inspire you to be great and passionate about design.
I would recommend undertaking a course with Wrexham Glyndwr University in a heartbeat! The creative art college environment is the perfect starting point for anyone wanting a career in graphic design. Being around other creatives is the best way to begin. It's in a great location too, close to Chester, Manchester, Liverpool and the coast, there are some great exhibitions both locally and in the surrounding cities too. As for the teaching and career progression, every single person on my course is still working in the field of design with many owning their own business, twenty years later!
Apart from meeting my husband and lifelong friends, I still remember working in the open plan studio with lecturers who seemed like friends and have stayed friends ever since.
Anyone who says school days are the best days of their lives have never experienced Art College. Wrexham Glyndwr is the best starting point for any budding creative.
