I first started at Wrexham Glyndwr University in 1996, studying Business Information Systems and Management and then returned for another course graduating last year, which has helped me to have a successful career in teaching.

I am not really the traditional university person. When I left school I didn’t have a lot of money and there was no expectation to go. I didn’t have any A-levels so when I decided to go to university I did an access to learning course and what I liked about Wrexham Glyndwr University was the flexibility and the common link of units, so I also started doing degree standard units.

I got married in 1997 and then went on to have a daughter in June 1998. I was able to bank credits before I gave birth so I could then take time out with my daughter. The university was so supportive when I was pregnant and so helpful I could return in the September. I then went on to do a PGCE in Bangor and later became an IT teacher. Within four years I became Head of IT and Vocational at Welshpool High School.

I decided to come back to Wrexham Glyndwr University in 2012 to study Learning and Technology through an online course and graduated late 2015.

When my dad died the university was so supportive. I tell my students that Wrexham Glyndwr offers a personal touch and support which I think bigger universities don’t have.

The university has become a family affair my family. My daughter who I was pregnant with when I was studying at the university for the first time, now works at The Fellows Café and the Wrexham Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium.

My daughter was so proud of me at my graduation, it was a great day. Wrexham Glyndwr gave me solid foundations and offered me amazing support throughout my studies. I think Wrexham Glyndwr is a fantastic institution to have on your doorstep. I’d encourage anybody thinking about going back into education to take the leap.
