Dr Xiaobing Huang received her BEng in Mechanical Engineering (1982) and MSc in Mechanical Engineering (1985) from Northeastern University. During 1982-1991, she worked as an assistant lecturer and lecturer at Northeastern University. She has taught “Fluid Mechanics”, “Multiphase Flow Bases” and “Theory and Application of Multiphase Flow” at BEng and MSc levels. Before she came to UK, she worked in Shenyang Northern Hydraulic Machinery Factory as a design engineer.
At the end of 1991, she arrived in UK to take a post of honorary visiting research associate at the FAST team in School of Chemical Engineering, the University of Birmingham. She had completed two contracts from 01/1992 to 07/1991 and 10/1992 to 03/1993. The research work carried out involved liquid and gas two-phase flow, such as bubble distribution in a jet plume. From 1995 to 1998, she did her PhD study at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in Materials for High Performance Applications and the School of Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham, and was awarded a PhD in Chemical Engineering for research on Rheology of Ceramic Paste in 1999.
In October 1998, Dr Huang started work in the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Materials for High Performance Applications, the University of Birmingham as a research fellow. Her researches focused on rheological property study on ceramic pastes and analysis of paste flows using analysis, experimental, continuum modelling and distinct element modelling methods. In August 2000, she was invited by National Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University, China to give seminars on “Rheology and processing of ceramic pastes”.
In April 2001, Dr Huang moved to School of Engineering and Science, University of Paisley (now the University of West Scotland) to take a lecturer position. She mainly engaged intensive teaching and supervision of the final year student projects. The modules taught were “Renewable Energy Systems”, “Design, Prototyping and Testing”, “Automation and Intelligent System”, “Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics”, “Materials and Manufacturing in Design” and “Applied Engineering Science”. Also, she had made contributions on delivery of the modules such as “Design Methodology”, “Graphical Communications in the Engineering Profession” and “Introduction to Intelligent System”.
In September 2005, Dr Huang joined the COLU (Cleveland Open Learning Unit), School of Science and Technology, University of Teesside as a technical author/lecturer. Her work was to produce new open and distance learning courses for mechanical engineering students, and to deliver lectures. The modules developed and taught were “Engineering Science (mechanical part)”, “Mechanical Principles”, “Engineering Design” “Applications of Pneumatics and Hydraulics”, “Engineering Thermodynamics” and “Fluid Mechanics and Heat transfer”.
In Mach 2007, Dr Huang was appointed as a senior lecturer in Aeronautical Engineering, Glyndwr University. Since then she has engaged intensive teaching activities and research work in various areas. Her teaching activities cover FdEng, BEng and MSc levels. The modules are “Advanced Manufacturing Technologies”, “Viscous Flow and Heat transfer”, “Propulsion”, “Thermo-Fluid Mechanics B”, “Computer based Analytical Tool B”, “Computer based Analytical Tool A”, “Thermo-Fluid Mechanics A”, “Aerodynamics A” and “Engineering Mathematics“. She also supervised many final year projects of BEng and dissertation projects of MSc students. She has made contributions to those researches conducted in CFD modelling and applications in two-phase flows.
What do you like to do in your spare time? During my spare time I enjoy gardening, shopping and taking care of our family cat.
What are your hobbies/interests? I also enjoy travelling around the world, exploring many different cultures and sampling all the various cuisines they have to offer. I am very passionate about cooking delicious Chinese dishes especially on the rare occasions my daughter comes home to visit.
