Martyn completed an engineering apprenticeship at Airbus UK, Broughton, before undertaking a MEng in Aeronautical Engineering (University of Liverpool 2008). After a period in industry designing composite structural components of the Airbus A350 (Assystem UK, 2011) he returned to academia to work as a project officer on the ASTUTE (Advanced Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies) Wales project, assisting SMEs in Wales with advanced manufacturing and design. He assumed control over the project in 2012 and shortly after was offered a lectureship at Glyndwr University in mechanical engineering.
Martyn is studying for a PhD (part-time) in Lightweight Optical surfaces and is the project manager of Glyndwr’s deliverables in a Framework 7 REA funded project in assessing the feasibility of composite mirrors for a cryogenically cooled infrared space interferometer. He has considerable design and manufacturing experience and has conducted research into advanced manufacturing techniques for composite structures and components.
Outside of work, I spend most of my free time walking in the Welsh and Cheshire countryside with my dog or, as a keen sports fan, following Wrexham FC.

My interests currently lie in utilising advanced materials for lightweight telescope optics. I am also interested in the use of CAD in engineering and how we can optimise structures using CAD methodology in combination with advanced engineering materials.
