I qualified in 1987 and worked clinically with Liverpool and Wirral Health Authorities within physical and mental health settings. In 1989 my role moved into social care, working for Wirral Borough Council for 14 years and with Cheshire County Council until moving into an education role.
My area of clinical expertise is with individuals who have a long-term disability and in the facilitation of their independence primarily through housing adaptation, rehabilitation and equipment provision. The client group often have complex needs due to chronic illness and disease and benefit from the removal of barriers which prevent these individuals living safe and meaningful lives.
I always enjoyed taking students on placement whilst I was a clinician and in 2004 I embraced a lecturer practitioner role on the Occupational Therapy degree here at Glyndŵr University. I took a full-time post in education in 2006 and continue to have an instrumental role in placement coordination for our students alongside my teaching role. This also involves developing new and diverse placement opportunities for our students to experience throughout their training.
I have been involved in the development of the Occupational Therapy programme since commencement in 2004 and participated in the validation of new curricula which not only involve meeting the standards required by the University but also those required by OT professional bodies. I commenced a Professional Doctorate programme in 2012 and am currently at the stage of writing up my research.
I enjoy rural living with my family. I have my own horse who I compete with, two exuberant cocker spaniels and a smattering of chickens!
Dip Cot (Derby School of Occupational Therapy), MSc Advanced Occupational Therapy (University of Plymouth), HCPC registration, BAOT membership, PGCPD (Glyndwr University), Fellow of Higher Education Academy and in the third and final thesis module of the Professional Doctorate Programme with University of Wales. I am actively involved in the Practice Placement Tutor forum under the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
The facilitation of practice education was the focus of my MSc dissertation. I have worked with collaboratively with Cardiff University in the publication of a textbook on Practice Education. My doctorate thesis is exploring resilience, personality and aptitude for occupational therapy students undertaking role-emerging placements.
