  • The video game industry is a fast-paced industry worth billions each year. This short course will introduce you to the current industry practices and design workflows used by game studios in the modern day.
  • Learn to hone your artistic skills in a more games-based focus, with relevance to game art and design.
  • Develop your own portfolio of concept and design work, which you'll also be able to show to potential employers in the video game and design industries.

• Conceptual Workflows in the Games Industry
• Design Solutions for Conceptualisation
• Time-Management
• Presenting Work Professionally
 
Art & Design Fundamentals:

• Design Process and Creative Workflow
• Colour and Shape Theory
• Drawing Skills and Traditional Media
• Digital Painting and Software Packages
• Idea Development and Concept Sketching
• Photo Bashing and Technical Skill for Concept Work
 
The timetable for the course will be as follows:

Week 1: Introduction and Case Studies in Industry
Week 2: Creation and Presentation of Proposed Workflow
Week 3: Art and Design Fundamentals for Concept Art
Week 4: Design Solutions and Portfolio Work
Week 5: Digital Painting and Photo Bashing
Week 6: Presenting a Professional Portfolio
 
The course will require 6 hours per week of online learning (2 blocks of 3 hours per week with some self-directed study). 
 
Delivery will be online through a mix of lectures, group tutorial elements along with additional one-to-one support sessions.

 

Teaching & Assessment

  • Assessment for this module will be based on the ongoing portfolio of work that is created throughout the course.
  • Students will be expected to continuously review/reflect and/or annotate their work within their portfolio and produce this portfolio as a single project. 
  • The final assessment piece should be submitted as a single workflow that demonstrates the design journey. This could be through a blog platform or in a PDF format.
