Reaching Wider North & Mid Wales Partnership

“The accessibility of higher education is a key contributor to improving social mobility and to providing opportunities for people from all backgrounds to improve their contribution to society and the economy. […] There remains a need for the [HE] sector to work collectively to raise the aspirations of under-represented groups who would not otherwise consider entering higher education.  This includes activities to widen access delivered through the Reaching Wider Partnerships”

(Leighton Andrews (letter to Roger Thomas), Guidance on Fee Plan Approval and Enforcement, 28th March 2011)

The Reaching Wider initiative

In collaboration with local partners, Wrexham Glynd┼Ár University has been a key player in promoting and developing a range of different  Reaching Wider activities to raise awareness of higher education.

The Reaching Wider initiative is a Wales-wide, Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) strategy, established in 2002, to widen participation and access to higher education, supporting social inclusion and up skilling.

The Reaching Wider initiative focuses on four main groups of people who are currently under-represented in Higher Education. These groups are those living in Communities First areas, people from ethnic minority communities, those who wish to study through the medium of Welsh and people who have a disability.
