Information for international applicants

If your first language is not English or Welsh and you have not achieved your undergraduate/postgraduate degree(s) in a recognised English speaking country, you will be required to demonstrate your competency in the English language by providing evidence of an IELTS certificate with a minimum IELTS Score of 6.5 overall at entry with no less than 6.0 in any component.

The University will not normally ask you to take an IELTS test if you have previously gained any previous degrees in a recognised English speaking country.

The IELTS test must be taken at a UKVI Approved Centre with a UKVI number and the certificate must be UKVI approved for academic purposes. The certificate cannot be more than 2 years old from the course start date.

Please note that International students will be required to pay the appropriate fee in full before an Unconditional Offer/Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) can be provided.

If you are subject to existing UK immigration permissions and your proposed research degree project is in a particularly sensitive subject area, you will need to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. You will need to produce your ATAS certificate to apply for a tier 4 or tier 2 visa. Details about the scheme can be found here.
