Our vision

To be recognised as a significant multi-disciplinary contributor to the generation and sharing of knowledge related to the leadership, impact and management of business organisations in regional, national and international contexts and in so doing take advantage of external opportunities and contribute to the strategic aspirations of the School and the University.

Our mission      

To promote business and management research on a multi-disciplinary basis, both within the University and with other national and international higher education partners, as well as developing advanced consultancy capability that outreaches to local, regional, and national business communities by being an accessible knowledge hub of advanced business thinking.

Research projects

Our research covers the broad scope of business topics from marketing intelligence, leadership and strategy and human resource management through to marketing, procurement, enterprise, accounting, impact analysis and business procedures and activities are undertaken through funded work and through the active supervision of our PhD students.  In addition members of the centre work colleagues from other universities to organise and deliver seminars and conferences.

The research centre has recently obtained funded work for projects such as:

  • 2017 Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) for Estimating the Contribution of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal (PAC) as a World Heritage Site (WHS) to the Local Economy during the Industrial Revolution of 1805 to 1847 - Value: £154,928
  • 2016 ERASMUS+ - to lead a project to develop social enterprise educational and training tools (SEDETT) with partner organisations drawn from Ireland, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Romania and Spain – Value: 275,000 euros
  • 2016 – Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) to work as part of a team with Bangor University and Coleg Cambria as partners to develop a North Wales Business Academy  - Value: £4.3 million
  • 2015/14 Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to undertake a series of strategic insight partnership projects with organisations into strategic marketing, cooperative procurement practices and lean processes - £17,500
  • 2014 – Knowledge Transfer Project (KTPs) with partner organisations to solve problems related to
  • Financial Management - £145,000

Examples of recent completed PhD thesis that have been supervised in the research centre addressed topics that included: best practice in the development of teams within a NHS context; modelling the determinants of a public sector cost accounting system and organisational change; developing a framework of factors affecting the competency of middle managers in large scale organisations; and developing a model of economic impact analysis for non-profit organisations in a regional context.

Research centre members are active in research organisations such as the British Academy of Management, and the Academy of Marketing and some work with colleagues from other universities in their respective special interest groups such as the B2B marketing Special Interest Group of the Academy of Marketing to organise and deliver colloquia/symposia and other fora to enable further specialised knowledge and understanding to be developed.
