Intensive English language courses (IELC)

Why choose this course?

Our IELC programme offers entry points throughout the year, three different starting levels and five different course durations.

The courses are designed to allow participants with some evidence of previous English language learning and academic qualifications to prepare for IELTS or other internationally recognised English language qualifications for entry to Wrexham Glyndŵr University.

Upon completing the course and attaining the required level of English, you will then be able to apply for an undergraduate or postgraduate course at Wrexham Glyndŵr University as appropriate.

Courses are delivered full time (25 hours guided tuition in a week throughout the year with short intervals in the main holiday periods) at three entry levels: pre-intermediate (IELTS 4.0 or lower), intermediate (IELTS 4.5/5.0) and upper intermediate (5.0/5.5). Any equivalent qualifications or experience will be considered at admission. Students enjoy all the benefits of being full members of the student community at Wrexham Glyndŵr University, with access to all learning and support facilities available on a vibrant campus.

The Language Centre is their ‘home’ for the duration of the course but they will also be introduced to the University as a whole. They will therefore gain first-hand knowledge about life in Higher Education in the UK generally. This will smoothen their start into academic programmes such as Arts, Business, Computing, Engineering etc.

What will I study?

Vocabulary and grammar are given equal importance, and there is a strong focus on listening and speaking skills in social and academic situations throughout the course. Reading and writing skills are honed progressively, and at higher levels they will be at the centre of learning. Language specific to participants’ future studies will be included towards the end of the programme as required and beneficial.

Advice and techniques necessary to prepare for internationally recognised exams, such as IELTS, will form an integral part of the programme towards the end of each course and enhance and focus the participants’ learning experience at the advanced stage of the programme.

Learning and teaching takes place in a seminar style environment, including sessions in a language laboratory and guided self-study in our Learning Resources Centre. The usual group size is 10-15 participants. Most learning resources are provided by the course organisers. Students’ progress will be monitored closely by the experienced and caring programme team.

Written reports will be issued to students on a monthly basis, and they will be advised regarding opportunities to enrol for an internationally recognised English Language certificate. The intimate and personalised learning experience at the Language Centre is what most former students say makes the courses so special and beneficial to them.

Social programme

All extra-curricular activities (e.g. student clubs) offered by Wrexham Glyndŵr University to undergraduate students are available to course participants. The Language Centre runs additional activities for full time and part time students, giving the international and multicultural student cohorts opportunities to meet and practise their newly acquired English language skills.

Students will enjoy the same support and facilities (including accommodation) as all undergraduate students at Wrexham Glyndŵr University. These range from welfare services, including healthcare provision and disability support, to a fitness centre and other recreational facilities.
