What is Fairtrade?
With Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With simple shopping choices (buying certified Fairtrade products) you can get farmers a better deal, it guarantees a price that covers the cost of production, a social premium for producer groups to invest in business or community development, long-term trading relationships and advanced payments. That means they can make their own decisions, control their futures and lead the dignified life everyone deserves.
How WGU is involved?
Wrexham Glyndwr University was officially awarded Fairtrade University Status on Monday 29th January 2018. The Fairtrade Foundation commented on our application,
“Well done, you have provided us with an incredibly detailed set of policies that extensively illustrate your commitment to Fairtrade and the steps put in place to ensure that a high standard of ethical practice is maintained. We are impressed by your motivation and it is great to see the possible collaboration with Wrexham’s Fairtrade group”.
Thanks to those who choose Fairtrade on a daily basis and those who have made the change to Fairtrade in support of this campaign, together we have achieved Fairtrade University Status. Congratulations to everyone involved.
WGU will continue to strive in becoming a more Sustainable, Fairtrade University. We aim to promote Fairtrade at every opportunity and follow the principals of the Fairtrade Foundation. We plan to run a range of events and activities with Fairtrade being the main focus for Fairtrade fortnight.
Before this academic year started we took the opportunity to promote Fairtrade at our open day 10th June 2017 by including a delicious Fairtrade flapjack along with a leaflet explaining what Fairtrade is, why it is important and how everyone can make a difference. We have continued to raise awarness for Fairtrade with events throughout the year.
