A leading league table has found Glyndŵr University is making big strides in its efforts to be more sustainable.

The university has shot up the influential People and Planet Green League after spending a year making significant improvements.

The Green League ranks UK universities according to their ethical and environmental performance.

Last year’s assessment saw Glyndŵr University finish 134th, with 15.5 points out of 70 overall. That total has more than doubled to 32.5, and the university now sits 89th out of 145 in the table.

Lynda Powell, chair of the university’s sustainability advisory forum, said: “The dramatic improvement in our score and position in the Green League is testament to the hard work and commitment of staff and students across the university.

“We have made significant changes which are having a real impact on a daily basis. However there is still much more we can do, and we aim to be even higher when the 2013 league table is published.”

The university scored particularly highly when it came to ensuring sustainability was a key part of the curriculum, and in recycling and waste reduction.

Jo Smith, the university’s health, safety and environmental manager said: “Among the many steps we have taken is the introduction of ‘green champions’ in each department of the university.

“These staff members take the lead on environmental issues and ensure colleagues understand the need to be more aware of key sustainability issues.

“In February we held a successful ‘Go Green Week’ which involved lots of activities to promote ideas such as car sharing, greener power options and shopping for local, sustainable produce. We are working hard to ensure there is a real culture of ethical and environmental awareness throughout the university, and for that to be recognised by these results is great news.”

In 2011 the university’s Centre for the Creative Industries was awarded Wrexham Civic Society’s first ever sustainability award.
