Wrexham Glyndwr University tunes-up for Focus Wales music festival

Following the much praised 2016 event, which saw an audience in excess of seven thousand people attend, FOCUS Wales festival returns to North Wales from May 11-13 for its seventh consecutive year.

For three days and nights, FOCUS Wales will once again take over the town centre of Wrexham - including Wrexham Glyndwr University - programming over 200 of the hottest new live acts as well as established names from Wales and beyond, and presenting music industry and tech panels, and interactive workshops and events, featuring expert speakers from across the globe.

The much anticipated line up for FOCUS Wales 2017 has been announced and features some of the best new music coming out of the UK right now. ‘International Treasures’ BRITISH SEA POWER have confirmed they will headline Saturday night at this year’s FOCUS Wales music and interactive festival. This comes in the wake of their latest single ‘Sechs Freunde’, which has received considerable radio play and ahead of the release of their latest album ‘Let The Dancers Inherit The Party’ later in the year.

Other headliners include NME favorites and ones to watch for 2017, CABBAGE (pictured), LUCY SPRAGGAN who has had three UK top 40 ablums to date since appearing on the X Factor, I AM KLOOT front man JOHN BRAMWELL, Welsh Music Prize Winner GEORGIA RUTH, hotly tipped Cardiff grime/punk outfit ASTROID BOYS, and GULP, who feature Super Furry Animals’ Guto Pryce.

2017 also sees the return of stand-up comedy to FOCUS Wales, with a theatre show from Live at The Apollo’s SHAPPI KOHRSANDI. This year also sees the addition of theatre to FOCUS Wales as the School of Creative Arts, Wrexham Glynd┼Ár University, present an adaptation of Complicitie’s The Street of Crocodiles. Inspired by the life and stories of Polish writer Bruno Schulz (1892 – 1942).

Here is a short selection of our other must-see acts: Islet, Gulp, Bryde, Into The Ark, Betsy, Seazoo, Aled Rheon, Danielle Lewis, CaStLeS, plus artists from Canada, France, Poland, Korea, Japan, and the USA!

Thursday 11th May kicks off the interactive programme with four panel sessions covering topics “Build a Music Career from Your Bedroom”, “DIY Toolkit: The Pros and Cons of DIY PR”, “Funding for Musicians and Organisations” and “Meet the Buyers”. The panels feature exciting international music industry professionals including delegates from VICE, BBC 6 Music, Boomtown Festival, Music Glue, and Liverpool Psych Festival.

Thursday’s conference comes to a close with a keynote from Grammy award winning film maker, and legendary DJ DON LETTS, who will be in conversation with John Robb. Don Letts’ reputation has been firmly established in both the film and music world by a substantial body of work from the late 70's through the 80's, 90’s and well into the millennium.

On Friday 12th May, panel sessions resume with a Musicians’ Union clinic at 10am. The day continues with a special panel “The World at Your Fingertips” featuring international delegates Sarah Shoucri of Pop Montreal, Rev. Moose of Marauder, USA, and others. The programme continues throughout the afternoon with “Meet The Agencies” featuring agents from 13 Artists, ATC Live, and LPO, “The Independents” with guests including Paul Jones: A&R Manager of Rough Trade, Rich Walker: General Manager of 4AD, and Andy Black of Popty Ping Records.

Alongside the interactive programme is Digital Innovations Day, taking place on Saturday 13 May at Undegun Artspace. Digital Innovations Day will host live performances, panel discussions, and an interactive expo.
