First phase of £200,000 catering overhaul sees new food bar and menus at Wrexham campus

Fresh food menus and a new food bar are now open as part of the first phase of a £200,000 overhaul of catering facilities at Wrexham Glyndwr University.
Summer school students were among the first to get a glimpse of the modern look to the university’s Scholars Rest and Fellows Café on Monday 31 July.
The new offering in the main restaurant will feature a daily ‘home comforts’ selection of food, along with a concept bar which will change daily in line with themes such as Mexican, American Diner and summer BBQ.
A new range of sandwiches and salads were also unveiled as part of the launch at Scholars Rest, along with a full breakfast selection.
Traditional coffee shop fayre – paninis, pastries, cookies and more - is on the menu at Fellows Café, which will serve Costa coffee once the catering overhaul is completed by the end of summer.
Food services company Aramark is leading the revamp and their staff are on site over the coming weeks to complete the new installations.
James Houlden, Regional Support Manager, said: “This is just the start of a long term partnership with the university but the first phase of the new project has gone really well. Feedback from customers has been very positive.
“There’s still a lot of work to be done before the end of September but we’re looking forward to implementing the changes and bringing about a fresh look to food and drink outlets across campus.”
Work on the full design and build project is set start in early September following the departure of summer school students.
This interim period before the start of the new term will see more additions to Scholars Rest, including a new salad and deli bar, and further work to the bar area of Fellows Café.
A new outlet serving Starbucks Coffee will replace Chapters in the library, while Café Darganfod on Crispin Lane will incorporate the Grumpy Mule brand.
All of the new cafes and restaurants are set to be ready to open fully in time for Freshers’ Week and will be renamed.
Lynda Powell, director of operations, said: “Completion of this first phase of the improvements to catering has created a real buzz around campus and we’re looking forward to everything being completed in time for the new academic year in September.”
Significant improvements to all areas of Wrexham Glyndwr University’s campus are being made as part of an estates strategy known as Campus 2025.
Plans include new student accommodation, improved IT and AV facilities, new social learning spaces, and upgraded teaching and research rooms.
