Students launch new online magazine

4 March 2016

Students will break from the norm when they launch a new online magazine.

The group from Wrexham Glyndŵr University’s School of Media, Art and Design will this week unveil Egwyl – which translates as ‘Break’ in English – for fellow students at the Welsh institution.

Packed with news, views, recipes, music and film reviews and articles on everything from arts and culture to health and lifestyle, the team is confident they are serving up a relevant and bold website which will act as a one-stop shop for readers.

Editor Sophie Francis says the decision to release it as a purely online platform reflects the interests of a younger audience while maintaining an editorial flavour to keep people interested.

“We think there is something for everyone, particularly the students here at Wrexham Glyndŵr,” said Sophie.

“We have a great group of editors and contributors but if more people want to get in touch and provide material for Egwyl then we would appreciate and welcome that – the more the better.

“It is early days but we are happy with how it’s shaping up and would like students to give us feedback on what works and what doesn’t so we can improve the website as we move forward.”

As well as articles and opinions there will be blogs, vlogs and tips on creative writing, photography, video and audio.

There are also guides to what’s on at the university and in the Wrexham area, dealing with LGBT issues, sport and match reports and much more.

“We hope the website will grow and grow so that when we graduate the next group of media students will take ownership of it and help create a legacy,” said Sophie.

“The students deserve a platform on which they can have their say, contribute new and exciting pieces of work and read more about what other people their age are saying and doing, as well as the best places to go in and around the local area.”

She added: “Wrexham Glyndŵr University has a wonderful community spirit and is renowned for its student focus; this is another way of providing them with a support network and will be written by them for them – we can’t wait to get started.”
