Free university funday to unite community and raise money for charities
A free celebration of food, fun and fairground rides will take place at Glyndŵr University.
The Wrexham University has joined forces with the NHS charity Awyr Las/Blue sky to host the inaugural Big Sunday Funday on September 27.
All proceeds will go to Glyndŵr Giving and Awyr Las, with various services within the Wrexham Maelor Hospital benefiting from proceeds, including the Children's Ward, Shooting Star Unit, dementia patient activities and others, some of whom will have a presence on the day.
Organisers are encouraging food and drink suppliers, craft makers, designers, dancers, musicians, artists and stallholders to get in touch and take-up a space on the event field, at the front of the main Plas Coch campus on Mold Road.
Among the activities already secured and people attending on the day will be community and Scouting groups, a fairground, land train, bouncy castle, superheroes on motorbikes, movie characters, a barbecue, indoor stalls and exhibitions.
Science buskers and the learning dome from Techniquest Glyndŵr will be on hand to educate and entertain the crowds, as will staff from the University’s Computing department with robots and innovative Oculus Rift technology.
Alumni and Fundraising Executive, Jemma Kinch, says it’s an opportunity to bring the community on-campus to experience first-hand what Glyndŵr University has to offer.
“We want to see as many people here as possible to raise money for these two causes,” said Jemma.
“A lot of people have already been in touch but we would still like to hear from those who would like to take up space with a stall, or businesses and community groups who would like a presence here on the day.
“At Glyndŵr we pride ourselves on being at the heart of Wrexham and look forward to welcoming families and new students to this event, which we hope will be the first of many.
Cath Humes, Partnerships and Sponsorship Manager at Awyr Las thanked the university for hosting the event and said the union with Glyndŵr will see both organisations go on to raise thousands of pounds for worthwhile causes in the years to come.
“We're delighted to form this exciting partnership with Glyndŵr University and to host this inaugural family fun day bringing local communities together,” said Cath.
“We very much value Glyndŵr's ethos to be at the heart of their community as Awyr Las/Blue Sky always strives to enable people to support local patients through those healthcare areas that are closest to their hearts.”
The event runs from 11am-4pm. For more information or to book a place for your business at the Big Sunday Funday, email firstname.lastname@example.org call 01978 293995.
