A combination of a computing degree and running a remote control car news website with 60,000 unique monthly visitors inspired Glyndŵr University graduate Kevin Redfern to start his own digital marketing business.

The 25-year-old set up Your Digital Marketer just under a year ago using knowledge gained from maintaining RCNews.net and skills from his BSc (Hons) Applied Computing course.

He’s recently moved into offices near his home town, Oswestry, and is driven by a passion for running his own business and being self-employed.

Kevin said: “I love being self-employed and I don’t see the future being any different. The best part about being your own boss is the ability to manage your workload around your own plans.

“I have the ability to take time off when I want providing work gets done, and I enjoy the freedom provided by my profession. Although I have an office where I spend most of my time, I can work from wherever I want.

“I wanted to move on to bigger and better things after running RCNews.net and I was able to use my self-taught digital marketing skills to set up my own agency, focusing on SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and PPC (Pay Per Click). Web design, user interface programming and informatics which I studied at university also helped.

“Your Digital Marketer is now 10 months old. Sales have increased month by month and I’m very excited to keep the business growing at this rate.

“I visited the ZONE business centre at Glyndŵr University on several occasions for advice and support. The support network really helped me as I could gain information and tips from experienced business owners.”

Global Entrepreneurship Week is encouraging hundreds of students to follow in Kevin’s footsteps this week by starting their own business.

Activities are being held locally, nationally and globally from November 16-22 to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs.

Judith Alexander, ZONE manager at Glyndŵr University, said: “Enterprise is at the heart of everything Glyndŵr University does and we are passionate about encouraging and facilitating our students to start their own business.

“Global Entrepreneurship Week isn’t just confined to business start-ups though. It’s about providing participants with new skills to exploit opportunities and become innovators in whatever field they choose to work in, whether that be employed or self-employed.”
