Theatre workshop boosts Malaysian employees

Skills developed for a life on stage and in front of camera are being used by a Glyndŵr University graduate to improve the confidence and language skills of a Malaysian workforce.

Sarah Cartwright, who studied on the university’s Theatre, TV and Performance degree, has been leading a 10 week practical skills workshop with employees from Strand Aerospace Malaysia.

The group are studying at Glyndŵr University under a sponsorship programme with the Malaysian Government agency, Majlis Amanh Rakyat, known as MARA.

Sarah took on the role to develop the students’ soft skills – tasks such as delivering presentations effectively, answering the phone and everyday conversations.

Voice projection exercises, ice-breaker games and activities based around movement were among the activities Sarah used.

Elen Mai Nefydd, senior lecturer in theatre, TV and performance, said: “The students from Malaysia obviously had good subject knowledge but we were asked to help to improve their confidence – and the response from them was fantastic.

“Sarah achieved a first class degree last year and was the perfect fit for delivering the course. The success of this short programme shows the versatility of our graduates.

“The course isn’t just about preparing students for acting on stage and they have lots of employment options when they leave the university. Sarah is showing already her ability to use the corporate drama and applied theatre skills which she learned here.”

Glyndŵr University joined forces with MARA when it signed an MOU in June 2013.

MARA is an agency formed in 1966 to aid, train and guide Bumiputra (Malays and other indigenous Malaysians) in business.

As well as operating polytechnics, colleges and the University of Kuala Lumpur, it established Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA (MARA Advanced Skills College) and Institut Kemahiran (MARA Skills Institute) offering certificate and diploma programmes in engineering and technology.

The MoU saw both parties commit to collaborate academically, sharing technology and expertise.
