Hundreds of fans of 90s rock band The Levellers visited Glyndŵr University as it hosted one of its biggest live music events for years.

Months of planning and work by the university’s AVL (Audio, Visual and Lighting) technical team culminated in a spectacular show in the William Aston Hall.

The event was the largest to be staged to date under a new partnership with venue and live event management company VMS Live, set up to boost Glyndŵr’s live music output.

Comprehensive audio and visual needs required to host a live touring band saw the installation of additional audio and lighting mixing desks, lighting rigs and PA systems to deliver the gig.

Andy Cheatham, AVL technical services manager at Glyndŵr University, said: ‘’This type of event gives our team an opportunity to show their expertise in this type of production as well as providing a chance to work with industry-standard technical crew and systems.

“The team are used to a pressure-filled events list over multiple venues but the amount of work that has to be undertaken to achieve this level of show in the William Aston Hall is exceptional, both pre and post event.

“There is a tremendous amount of unseen work which goes on, such as having to remove and re-install over 700 seats in a three day period. This is added to our existing commitment of providing ongoing technical support in over 80 teaching rooms and lecture theatres on the main campus alone.

“Our newly-formed relationship with VMS has got off to a successful start which bodes well for the future relationship between us.’’

Lynda Powell, director of operations at Glyndŵr University, said: “Securing the Levellers was a great coup for the university and the event was a huge success.

“We are delighted with the start of the partnership with VMS Live and are looking forward to taking our successful arts and entertainment programme to a new level.”

Next year sees one of the UK’s most familiar reggae bands play in the William Aston Hall.

UB40 visit Glyndŵr University on Saturday May 23 at 8pm, with all tickets priced at £28.50 plus booking fees.
