Technology driven staff and students from Glyndŵr University will join more than 16,000 others worldwide in attempting to make a video game in under 48 hours.

For the second year running, the university will be the only one in Wales hosting Global Game Jam.

The event begins on Friday 24 January at 5pm and continues uninterrupted for the following 48 hours, finishing at 5pm on Sunday 26 January.

Global Game Jam is designed to bring people together from all backgrounds and encourage creative thinking to result in small but innovative and experimental games.

A record 17,000 plus participants are expected to be involved this year.

The event at Glyndŵr University will feature a keynote speech from Murti Schofield, a veteran writer and artist with more than two decades of experience in the games industry.

Schofield has worked as lead writer on the world famous Tomb Raider games and will be sharing his thoughts on narrative and the building blocks of successful games design.

Event organiser Richard Hebblewhite, senior lecturer in computing at Glyndŵr University, said: “The outcome of the Game Jam weekend last year was a staggering 700,000 hours of
development time and we’re expecting this to be even higher in 2014.

“We’re pleased to be able to play a small part in the event here in Wrexham, where we have lots of talented programmers and designers.

“The event isn’t just for those connected with the university though. We want anyone with a passion for video games to join in whatever their level of experience or expertise.

“We’re delighted that Murti is able to join in too, and I’m sure he will provide us with some excellent tips and advice as we set about building our games.”

There is a small fee of £10 for the Global Game Jam at Glyndŵr University which will provide for snacks, drinks and a few small prizes.
