A new award scheme for Wrexham has named a joint student and matchday bar as one of the safest in town.

The Centenary Bar at the Glyndŵr University Racecourse Stadium picked up a silver award in the 2014 Best Bar None Wrexham awards.

Introduced this year, the awards aim to recognise pubs, bars and clubs in the town which provide safe environments for customers and a commitment to preventing alcohol-related crime.

The Cent is the main bar used by Glyndŵr University students and Wrexham FC fans at home games.

All bars and licensed premises in Wrexham which entered into the awards were judged against rigorous criteria based on aspects of safety and customer service.

The judging panel was made up of representatives from Wrexham County Borough Council, North Wales Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Phil Bennett, Glyndŵr University Racecourse Stadium operations manager, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised as one of the safest bars in town. Operating as both a student bar and sports bar means our customer base is inevitably varied. The award reflects the hard work of staff at the bar in making the Cent as welcoming as possible and an enjoyable and safe place to socialise.”

The awards ceremony was held at the Ramada Plaza Wrexham.

Councillor David Griffiths said: “I was delighted to be present at the awards ceremony and would like to congratulate each and every licensed premise that participated in the scheme and received awards.

“The overall goal of Best Bar None is to raise standards and reward excellence. As a result of the licensees’ hard work and commitment to achieve the Best Bar None standards, customer and visitors to premise in the County Borough are sure to enjoy an excellent service.

“Our licensees are serious about customer care and safety and provide a consistent standard which support Licensing Regulations and policies and best practice.

“Each and every premises that achieved accreditation will now be displaying the Best Bar None stickers at their premises so when you see the stickers you can be sure of a safe and enjoyable visit.”

The Cent is available for private parties and celebrations. Email or call 01978 264404 for more information.
