14 January 2013
Students and lecturers at a Glyndŵr University will attempt to develop video games and video game apps for mobile phones from scratch in under 48 hours.
Glyndŵr University is the only organisation in Wales hosting and taking part in Global Game Jam, an annual event which connects computer game artists, programmers and enthusiasts.
Over 48 hours, more than 10,000 participants from 240+ countries worldwide will join together to share ideas and begin game projects.
Glyndŵr University is hosting the event for the first time in its Centre for the Creative Industries, from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 January 2013.
Teams taking part will be able to submit apps for the Windows 8 platform to a website at the end of the event as part of a competition run by Microsoft.
Other participants in the Global Games Jam will be developing for Android and PC.
Professor Vic Grout, head of computing at Glyndwr, which runs its own degree course in computer game development, said, “It’s going to be a great experience for everyone involved in Glyndŵr University’s hosting of the 2013 Global Games Jam.
“Having the participants here in Wrexham will be of great interest to staff and students alike and will focus attention on the world of creative game development.
“For their part, I know the participants will appreciate our state-of-the-art labs and equipment and enjoy the surroundings they’re working in. I expect everyone will emerge from the weekend tired but satisfied.”
Gaz Deaves, gaming editor for the Guinness World Records 2012 Gamer’s Edition, said: "In a time when games studios are expressing concern over the influx of programming talent into their industry, it's great that Global Game Jam can act as fertile ground to nurture the next generation of superstar developers.”
