11 March 2013

Main text
Closing down specialist nursing services in the UK is ill conceived and will lead to compromised patient care and higher costs, a university professor will argue in a public lecture.

Professor Fiona Irvine, Professor of Nursing at Glyndŵr University, will support the case for retaining specialist nurses in her talk at Wrexham’s Catrin Finch Centre on Thursday 14 March 2013.

The lecture is part of Glyndŵr University’s 2012-13 Inaugural and Professorial Lecture Series, a collection of talks which showcase the university’s world-leading research and enterprise.

Professor Irvine will explore some of the challenges that specialist nurses face in their day to day practice and the key successes of their role.

At a time when the role of the specialist nurse is under threat, she will draw on her clinical experience and research work to argue the case for continuation based on the valuable care which they provide.

Katie Dutton, events coordinator at Glyndŵr University, said: “Fiona’s talk touches upon a big issue within healthcare in the UK and has already proved extremely popular with places filling up fast.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming so many people to what promises to be a really insightful lecture.”

Glyndŵr University’s Inaugural and Professorial Lecture Series aims to showcase and celebrate the academic excellence of the university's professorial staff, and bring leading research and thinking to the wider community.

The lectures are open to all and free to attend. Each lecture will be followed by a reception, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet the speaker and discuss the topic in more detail.

Fiona Irvine’s talk starts at 7pm in the Catrin Finch Centre on Glyndŵr University’s Wrexham campus.
