People & Places

28 May – 19 October 2009

Curated by Nicola Shane

This exhibition was selected to show the diversity of subjects, concerns, styles and techniques explored by five contemporary photo-based artists working in the UK.  Chan-Hyo Bae is a young Korean artist living and working in London whose work addresses cultural identity and contrasts that of Jorma Puranen, a former Professor of Photography at the Helsinki School of Art and Design.  Anna Rackard's photographic portraits of woman in the agricultural industry and Neeta Madahar's constructed images of horticultural exotica present different aspects of rural life. Rare early work by Garry Fabian Miller is juxtaposed with the photographic portraits of Alice Maher.  Photography plays a vital part in our understanding of the world - the ever-changing cultural and technical landscape has ensured that photography continues to fascinate and challenge us.
