Glyn O. Phillips Centre for Hydrocolloid Research

The Centre’s Mission

The Centre’s broad Research Objective is to remove natural variability and enhance functionalityand develop new uses such as more reliable food additives, and new biomaterials for promoting health and to control disease.

Hydrocolloids are materials of plant, animal or human origin which have extensive uses as food additives and for biomedical transplant purposes. Since they are of natural origin they can differ in properties according to their source. The research has used protected methods to remove these variations, so that they can be consistent and compete better with synthetic alternatives.

On this basis several new products have been produced and are either licensed or being licensed to major international food and food ingredient companies.
