Glyn O. Phillips Centre for Hydrocolloid Research

About the Centre

This international bioscience research centre is dedicated to researching and identifying natural materials capable of being used for biomedical and food additive applications. The Centre was officially launched by Sir Roger Jones, then Chairman of the Welsh Development Agency and Welsh Industrial Entrepreneur in June 2003 and is funded by the Phillips Hydrocolloid Research Company whose Executive Chairman is Professor Glyn O. Phillips, an internationally recognised Welsh chemist.

Research undertaken at the Centre focuses on hydrocolloids - materials of plant, animal or human origin which have extensive uses as food additives and for biomedical purposes. The Japanese foods and foods ingredients company San-Ei Gen F.F.I. Inc., (http://www.saneigenffi.co.jp) with whom Professor Phillips has strong links, initiated the idea for the Centre which builds on Wales’ already dynamic bioscience sector.
