PROJECT/DISSERTATION

BSc(Hons) Level 3 Project/Dissertation [COM611/COM613] (Semesters 1 & 2)

The last push ... Project classes will restart on Tuesday 24th April. Usual time (1-2pm), usual place (ELC LTA). Projects due in (TO ME PLEASE) by 3pm on Friday 4th May. Project Demos on Thursday 10th May. See project demo schedule for your room and time.

Remember, project reports this year should use the IEEE referencing system (http://www.ieee.org/documents/ieeecitationref.pdf), not Harvard as before. More information to follow ...

Tuesday 4th October 2011

OK, so what's a project? What's it for? What do I have to do? How can I pass it? (Why might I fail it?) Who's going to help me? How do I start? Maybe by looking at the module specifications. COM611 is the 40 credit version, COM613 the 20 credit one.

Then we'll start with a brief overview and make sure we're all aware of the key dates that we're working to.

Then, there are tons of ideas for projects here, here and here. But you can think up something for yourself if you like or you may have a project that your employers want you to do. There are a few key real-world problems here that will be open to competition.

Here's the official assignment briefs for the 40 credit project (COM611) and the 20 credit project (COM613).

Finally, for this week, some other things to think about and look out for when choosing a project.

Tuesday 11th October 2011

Before we go any further, we're going to have to consider research ethics.

If you need some guidance on who to approach for guidance on your proposal and/or to supervise your project then check out the staff research profiles on the CAIR website. (But please don't approach 'visiting' staff or associates/students: they might not understand what you want ... oh, and the Dean and Pro Vice Chancellor might be a little busy too!)

Tuesday 18th October 2011

An overview of information searching for your literature review, how to use the library UNIcat system and.notes on how to use the Athens system to access research papers, etc.

Project proposals must be submitted by 3pm on Tuesday 25th October.

Tuesday 25th October 2011

There won't be a formal project class this week as it's a sort of unofficial study week' but I'll be available (at least) on Tuesday to deal with any issues that may arise. More importantly, project proposals must be submitted by 3pm on Tuesday 25th October. A good time to think about project specifications, which must be submitted by Friday 18th November.

For comparison, here's the Emerging Technology spec. and here's an example of how key parts of the project spec, might look.

Tuesday 1st November 2011

Then we need to think about posters

Tuesday 8th November 2011

Once you've had the project proposal and specification approved, your first main task is the literature review.

Some guidance on IEEE referencing in Word. (Haven't really checked this yet.) This is a more sophisticated package. (Haven't played with this either - although it only works for Firefox..) This is a useful tool from Tom Moxon.

Tuesday 15th November 2011

Project specifications must be submitted by 3pm on Friday 18th November.

Once you've got some material, the notes on Critical Analytical Thinking should help you assess it professionally. (May not fit all of this in this week so could continue it into next.)

Tuesday 22nd November 2011

As you're writing your literature review, remember to use make sure you avoid plagiarism - deliberate or accidental.

Tuesday 29th November 2011

Special session from Neil Pritchard, from the Careers Centre, Notes to follow.

Start preparing posters for the week after next.

Tuesday 6th December 2011

Literature reviews must be submitted by 3pm Friday 9th December.

Then finish posters for next week.

Tuesday 13th December 2011

Last-minute poster issues.

Poster presentations take place from 0900-1300 on Wednesday 14th December in room B125. You need to arrive by 0830 to get your poster on display or you can sort it out the Tuesday afternoon/evening before. Nigel Houlden will be helping to run things so contact him if you can help, etc.

Tuesday 7th February 2012

Back to basics. Now that the poster and literature review are out of the way, what next? How do we actually do and write up a project? Discussion.

Use the Project Diary/Logbook Sheets to record your progress and meetings with your supervisor. This demonstrates good 'project management, which will get you extra marks.

Tuesday 14th February 2012

Reading week. No session. Contact me by email if necessary.

Tuesday 21st February 2012

How to layout your project report. As you're writing your project report, remember to use IEEE referencing and make sure you avoid plagiarism - deliberate or accidental. Lots of good guidance here for writing your report.

Other resources might be available through Moodle. Or you might need the Cisco Networking Academy.  If none of this is any use to you then it's probably not me that you want.  Try looking for other student material, different aspects of Computing or across Glyndwr
