Overview
Ben has been with Glyndŵr University’s management school since 2003 and is the departmental research co-ordinator, organising research seminars and activities for staff and PhD students. His big challenge is strengthening research within the university in order to make a successful bid for the power to award PhDs by the end of 2012.
"The university has recently been given degree-awarding powers but we don’t have research degree awarding powers, the diploma for PhD students is from the University of Wales so we’re trying to strengthen our research,” he says.
"My responsibility within the Management subject area is trying to achieve that, overseeing the transition from teaching to research. We have to submit a Research Excellence Framework which details the research profiles of individual staff and send it for ranking.
"We want to achieve this by the end of 2012. There’s a lot of good research going on but we’re still growing and developing.
"We want to encourage students to apply for a PhD in any areas of business from marketing to finance."
Ben’s own research concerns the application of business modelling and finance. He looks after 10 PhD students and says applications to study PhDs within the department are on the increase.
