Meet the student

Stephen Griffiths from Manchester, third year BA (Hons) Education and childhood studies

What made you choose Glyndŵr University?

I chose Glyndŵr University as I was impressed with the emphasis on pastoral care clearly available upon attending the interview.

How are you finding the course so far?

I have found the course an enjoyable one. The mixture of lectures and placement is helpful in being able to link the theoretical knowledge we acquire in class to practical examples. A lot of the lectures have strong practical elements and this means that it’s a lot easier to remain focused and it also makes it easier to remember some of the more complex ideas discussed.

A lot of the subjects talked about tackle some more controversial topics and this can lead to debates which are very enjoyable and provide you with a mixed set of opinions.

How much support is offered by academic staff on the course?

I have been very impressed with the support offered by the staff on the course all of whom know each student's names and a little about their background. The heads of course in particular make sure that they know each student individually and are always willing to listen to any problems a student is having, be they academic or personal. Solutions are offered to problems and you always feel as if there is a strong support base.

How does the course prepare you for the world of work?

The course prepares you for the world of work in the way that it ensures that you are given the opportunity learn about just how many jobs there are out there working with children and families. Also you learn the skills of conducting yourself professionally, discussing ideas sensibly with a group and delivering information effectively to a large group of people.

What are your future plans once you have graduated?

I intend to apply for my PGCE once I have gained a little more experience of the world of work, currently I am applying for positions in schools working particularly with children with Special Educational Needs. The course provides you with a good level of understanding of several different learning organisations which has enabled me to apply for positions in both primary and secondary schools.

Ultimately I hope to teach in a primary schools and I believe that the course gives you a comprehensive understanding of the holistic needs of a child and so leaves you well equipped for this kind of work.
