BA (Hons) Theatre, Television and Performance

Acting and performing for TV and theatre have always been closely linked. But you need an impressive set of skills to make sure you shine at both. Our Theatre, Television and Performance degree equips you with core skills for a life in theatre - be it on stage, in applied theatre, working within the community, or other areas of theatre and communication. It will open up career options much further beyond as well. You’ll develop public speaking skills which are second-to-none and have the managerial and organisational skills to make a difference.

You will learn the basics of performing and stage discipline, plus prepare yourself for the demands of academic writing and study. Take part in live theatrical performances, prepare for TV and radio production work and projects in the local community. You will be given the freedom to work on your creativity - devising your own plays or perhaps managing your own productions.

Course content

BA (Hons) Theatre, Television and Performance

A mix of practical and theory, the degree will develop your skills in reading for the stage, text in performance, directing and advanced performance process. Study areas include drama in the community, acting practice, movement studies, television performance, applied drama, post-war British drama, live performance, directing for theatre, vocational industry work experience, new writing-new media-new theatre-new future, TV and radio performance and production, 20th century European drama, dissertation, showcase.

You will gain a foundation to studying Theatre, Television and Performance in the early stages of the course. The first academic year will focus on basic performance skills and stage discipline as well as preparing you for academic writing and study.

In the second year of the study you will develop performance skills further by preparing for live theatrical performances, television and radio production. You will undertake projects which will be performed on campus and in the local community, productions and projects will vary from being Theatre in Education productions, full community productions, television filming and radio drama recording.

In the final year of the course you will have the opportunity to specialise and explore your own creative and academic knowledge further, through directing and writing your own plays, managing full scale productions and setting up school, business and local community projects. A large scale production is performed at the end of your studies that will highlight your talents, this is an opportunity to invite employers, agents and directors to watch the students at work and promote them in order to gain employment.

Assessment

Assessments for this degree are undertaken through presentations, live performances for audiences, projects and essays.

Entry requirements and applying

240 points at A level or equivalent. You will also be asked to attend an informal interview in order meet the tutors and for you to be shown around the studio space. See information on general entry requirements.

Part time applicants should apply direct

From 2012 our general academic requirement for an honours degree will be 240 UCAS points, and for a foundation degree 120 UCAS points. If you do not have the points required your application will still be considered. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a range of experiences.
