BSc (Hons) Sustainable Development
The sustainable development industry is one of the largest in the UK and professionals in this discipline are highly sought after to manage sustainable building projects all around the world.
Designers, constructors and managers have been working to reach low carbon goals and energy efficiency for a number of years. This degree focuses on best practice across the built environment field. The aim of this course is to prepare the next generation of professionals to meet the needs of employers requiring an integrated approach to new developments and the refurbishment and reuse of existing buildings.
Key facts
- This degree is accredited in the UK and Europe by the European Association of Professional Engineers
- You will be eligible to join the Association of Building Engineers (ABE) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) at student level, on the recommendation of a tutor, membership is usually free or at a concessional rate
- There is scope within the degree to explore areas of individual interest though it has a particular emphasis on modern construction methods using sustainable materials and on the sourcing effects on local economies
Course content
BSc (Hons) Sustainable Development
The course covers a broad range of topics:
- development of the built environment
- law
- economics
- construction
- the property market
- surveying and valuation
- renewable energy issues
- sustainability in practice
- inter-professional studies enable you to practice the skills of team work and corporate responsibility
You will develop technical knowledge as well as developing skills in:
- team leadership
- analysis and inquiry
- presentation
- problem solving
- innovation and design skills

Assessment
Assessment methods include simulated work-based tasks, presentations, designs, professional reports and group assignments with team tasks, some of which are time controlled.

Entry requirements and applying
The academic requirements for the honours degree are 240 UCAS points at A2 level or equivalent. Applicants with other qualifications and/or relevant experience are welcomed. Those with higher education level qualifications or professional qualifications may be able to enter at an advanced level.
General entry requirements

From 2012 our general academic requirement for an honours degree will be 240 UCAS points, and for a foundation degree 120 UCAS points. If you do not have the points required your application will still be considered. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a range of experiences.
