Why choose this course?

Social work is an intensely challenging but rewarding career. The BA (Hons) Social Work (Qualified Social Worker Status) degree will develop your communication, advocacy and decision-making skills, and give you a sound understanding of both child and adult practice.

This degree enables students to develop an understanding of the knowledge, values and skills that underpin professional social work practice. It covers a range of legal, methodological, policy, practice, procedural and theoretical considerations. These include the importance and value of social work, its development in social policy contexts and the legislative and theoretical frameworks within which it operates.

You will have the opportunity to explore working with individuals and groups and within diverse practice settings in the statutory, voluntary and third sectors, for example, services focused on child protection, adoption and fostering, adults with learning disabilities, youth justice, mental health, older people and drugs and alcohol. You will develop a range of key skills including assessment, methods of intervention, management and evaluative research.

As well as gaining an academic qualification, you will be eligible on graduation to register with the four care councils of the UK as a qualified social worker – a prerequisite for practice.
