Our BA (Hons) Post-Compulsory Education and Training degree is a top-up course if you hold a Certificate in Education (Post-compulsory Education and Training). It enables you to build upon your practical experience by exploring contemporary issues in teaching and learning to enhance your own practice and career opportunities.

With a government drive to raise the standards of teaching across the education sector, including post-compulsory, our degree builds upon the credits you’ll have achieved through your Certificate in Education.

Course content

BA (Hons) Post-compulsory Education and Training covers all the essential knowledge and skills needed for post-compulsory teaching. Topics you will study include mentoring strategies, classroom observation strategies, inclusive learning, vocational education and the philosophy of education. It’s also a pathway for you to undertake additional research and scholarly activity within your own workplace.

Assessment

There are a range of assessment methods used for this degree including presentations, written assignments, case studies and critical evaluation and reflection. Throughout the course the assessment strategies focus on post-compulsory working practices and you will, wherever possible, be encouraged to produce your assignment evidence from your own work context. A dissertation will be required as a final part of the assessment for the course.

Course duration

Part time: approximately 2 years

Entry requirements and applying

A Certificate in Education (PcET) is required. It is also expected that you will have a minimum of three years full-time equivalent teaching in the post-compulsory education sector. You will need to show us evidence of continuing professional development throughout this time, or an equivalent professional qualification.

Part time: apply direct

From 2012 our general academic requirement for an honours degree will be 240 UCAS points, and for a foundation degree 120 UCAS points. If you do not have the points required your application will still be considered. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a range of experiences.
