Why choose Illustration for Graphic Novels?

This new and unique course is much more than “comic book illustration”. It enables you to specialise within illustration in developing images and characters for graphic novels allowing you to gain practical experience and detailed knowledge and techniques appropriate to this area.

The degree is designed to encompass a broad range of creative skills that are vocationally orientated giving you experience and techniques which will promote a confident approach to prospective employment as illustrators in the graphic novels industry, traditional and e-publishing, newspapers, magazines and related creative industries areas such as animation and film.

You will develop your skills in character design, graphic design working with layout, colour, typography, a host of digital software packages and creative writing through this course. These skills can be put to use in a variety of roles in the creative industries.

Course content

Through studying this degree you will understand how to write and convey stories and ideas through text and art; learn about character development; research stories and creative concepts and use a range of drawing techniques as methods of communication. Your design skills and concepts will be supported by critical studies research. Emphasis is placed throughout the course on your professional development and practice.

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment methods used including presentations, critiques, and formative assessment takes place after assignments including submitting sketchbooks, design sheets, finished artwork, 3D work, screen based work, technical/production files, journals, essays and audio-visual presentations.

Assessment methods are designed to facilitate the nature and pace by which students produce work and to encourage efficient management and effective planning of time and resources.

Entry requirements

The academic requirements for this course are 200 points in relevant A level subjects or equivalent. See information on general entry requirements. All candidates are invited for interview and are asked to display a portfolio of their work.
