Legislation concerning health and safety is becoming increasingly important as industry recognises the tremendous impact of these issues and their importance in the workplace.
The courses examine ways to manage risk effectively and offer a broad understanding of health and safety issues. Areas covered include law, communication, science, and management as they relate to health and safety. The courses will also develop your personal skills in relation to the work environment such as effective communication, information technology skills, problem solving, management skills, project management and organisational skills.

Course information
NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
Course content
The National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. The content of the course is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO.
The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
- Management of Health and Safety (NGC1)
- Controlling Workplace Hazards (NGC2)
- Health and Safety Practical Application (NGC3)
Assessment
There are a range of assessment methods used including written assignments, professional portfolios, written and practical examinations. The assessment for the NEBOSH courses are written and practical examinations.
Entry requirements
No previous health and safety knowledge is required.

Part time: 17 weeks. NEBOSH courses require attendance at the University for one day a week.
NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
Course content
The NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety covers the main legal requirements relating to health and safety in UK construction work, identification and control of construction workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. The content is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO and is supported by Construction Skills.
The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
- Management of Health and Safety (NGC1)
- Managing and Controlling Hazards in Construction Activities (NCC1)
- Health and Safety Practical Application (NCC2)
Assessment
There are a range of assessment methods used including written assignments, professional portfolios, written and practical examinations. The assessment for the NEBOSH courses are written and practical examinations.

NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management
Course content
The NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management course covers the management of health and safety and in particular fire safety including legal requirements. It also includes principles of fire and explosion, causes and prevention of fires, fire protection in buildings and ensuring the safety of people in the event of fire. The content is designed to equip those studying it to undertake fire risk assessments in most, low risk workplaces. The content is mapped to both the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO and the Fire Safety NOS owned by SkillsPlus.
The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
- Management of Health and Safety (NGC1)
- Fire Safety and Risk Management (FC1)
- Practical Fire Risk Assessment (FC2)
