Meet the students - Masters in Public HealthStudents who've successfully completed the Masters in Public Health at Glyndŵr University share their experiences of the programme and the support they received along the way. Manju Bhargavi Gali (full-time international student from India)It has given me immense pleasure to be a student of the Masters in Public Health at Glyndŵr University. It is a professional program which prepares students with the theoretical and applied knowledge to be able to undertake roles in the area of public health. Constant demand for good public health managers and scarcity of qualified personnel in the health sector promises good job opportunities. The infrastructure and facilities at Glyndŵr University encourage students to develop their academic skills. The university is the hub of knowledge with numerous books, journals, and access to the internet across campus. Moreover, the research experience of the teaching staff that is often shared during lectures, allows the student to understand the application of public health knowledge beyond theory. Student accommodation makes you feel at home. Margaret Hanson (part-time UK student)When I applied to join the MPH course at Glyndŵr, I wasn’t sure what I was letting myself in for – but I knew I was watching too much junk TV late at night after I had got the kids to bed. Now, at the end of two years’ hard work, I can look back at my decision to sign up for the MPH part–time and honestly say that it was one of the best things I have ever done. My confidence has soared, I have developed skills that are transferable from the academic arena into my workplace and I have learned a lot about myself. It can be hard going when you are working all day and then having to study at night – but it is so rewarding when you submit your work and pass the modules. I got through with lots of support from my fellow students and course tutors, and have emerged on the other side with the ability to read research papers, weigh up arguments and analyse other peoples’ assertions with confidence. I have learned to think, to question and to research at speed, bringing these skills to bear in my everyday work. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of doing this course to go for it – you will develop in ways you cannot imagine and you will have fun (sometimes!) in the process. Paula Jenkins (part-time) UK studentThe Masters in Public Health perfectly complements 34-year-old Paula Jenkins’ job as a workplace health advisor with Public Health Wales - an NHS organisation which offers independent health advice to the general public. The role is full time and sees Paula visit workplaces across North Wales to promote health and safety to employees. “I study the Masters in Public Health part time and work full time – my job and the course fall side by side with the objective of improving the health of the public,” said Paula. “My work is all about promoting a happy and healthy workforce.” Paula started her career in environmental health after gaining a BSc Environmental Health at another UK university, moving into public health a few years ago. She added: “The reputation of the staff here at Glyndŵr was the main reason I chose to come. I’ve built close relationships with other students and the variety of coursework and presentations is fantastic.” |
