Counselling and Psychotherapy
MA Counselling and Psychotherapy*
This course provides an opportunity to earn an MA in person-centred and experiential counselling and psychotherapy which will prepare you to work with young people and adults, within institutions, and through self-employment.
If you want to train as a person-centered counsellor - if you want to offer the possibility of an empathic, authentic relationship and eventually provide an effective therapeutic relationship - you need to experience the truth of person-centered claims for yourself. That means you need a course consistent with the person-centred viewpoint.
Person-centered education is at the heart of Glyndŵr University. Delivery and content are grounded in a contemporary understanding of the theory and practice of the founders of client-centred theory Carl Rogers and his colleague, philosopher and theorist Eugene T. Gendlin:
- Empathic acceptance, absence of judgment, and honest, authentic assessment to facilitate human potential. These alone can prove sufficient for change, healing, and profound therapeutic movement
- Therapeutic movement is more likely and will tend to be more rapid when careful, friendly attention is paid by an individual to their moment-by-moment experience and the way it is processed. Equal emphasis is placed upon both of these aspects of the person-centred tradition and play and expressive therapy are experienced in light of them. Criticisms are also considered. Attention is paid to current developments such as the relationship between counselling and spirituality; conceptions of process and how these relate to the medical model; as well as the therapeutic importance of tenderness. Overall, the course prepares you for your clinical placements and eventual employment working with young people and with adults, either in institutions or in more entrepreneurial settings.

Career opportunities
Counselling and psychotherapy are personally and professionally challenging. The National Strategy for School-based Counselling Services in Wales will increase demand for appropriately trained counsellors, and a well-trained and effective therapist determined to establish themselves in private practice will always find opportunities. Wherever you see yourself in five years time, if it involves working as a counsellor or psychotherapist, you need a sound training, and it is increasingly likely that you will also need a recognised qualification from a University.
Entry requirements
You will need an honours degree in counselling or a related subject or equivalent qualification. Entry to the courses is by interview and a brief application statement. We look for students who have the necessary commitment, maturity, life experience, and academic competence to benefit from this training.
Assessment
So far as possible, assessment follows a person-centred model of individual responsibility and accountability. Rigorous academic assignments are monitored for academic quality and commented upon as part of the ongoing training conversation. They include essays, transcripts, research project and presentations. Successful completion of clinical placements is an essential part of the course.
