Centre for Disability StudiesIntroductionThe Centre for Disability Studies (CfDS) is a young education, research and policy centre within Glyndŵr University. It received University approval in the latter part of 2006 and took its place within the University in 2007. The CfDS is involved in research and education that both informs and is informed by Welsh, national, European and international policy with the overt aim of improving the quality of life and increasing opportunities and independence for disabled people, people with chronic illness, their families and carers. The CfDS initially engaged with external stakeholders - public, private, third sector, disabled people and carers - from across Wales, firstly to identify if there was a need for a disability education and policy centre in Wales and, if so, to inform its strategic direction. Following eighteen months of engagement three key areas have continually come to the forefront, and the CfDS has taken these as the primary (but not sole) focus of its activities:
Through working in partnership with its stakeholders, the CfDS can remain at the forefront of disability education, research and policy adjusted to meet changing needs and demands. Within the University the CfDS works across the academic and operational areas, drawing on expertise in areas of disability education, research and policies, and contributing to programme development in areas such as the Built Environment, Education, Social Sciences and the Arts.
