The Second Language Learning Centre provides an established in-sessional Academic English programme to all International and European students registered at Glyndŵr University.
Following a short diagnostic English language test, students are allocated to groups based on their prior knowledge of English in their main subject area. The subject specific programme, running concurrently with the students’ core modules, has been designed to enhance students’ linguistic and academic skills, as well as ease their adjustment to British culture in general and to UK Higher Education in particular. It has been proven that students’ success in their studies is clearly enhanced by this supporting module which students are encouraged to attend regularly.
Tuition is provided by experienced and highly qualified language lecturers. Traditional areas of academic speaking, writing, listening and reading are covered alongside other topics such as subject specific vocabulary, grammar and current UK related and international issues.
Continuous assessment takes place in all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) in order to monitor students’ progress in support of their main programme. On successful completion students are awarded a University Transcript (20 UK HE credits) of Academic English and British Culture which will be an additional useful document for employment purposes.
