Historical Site at Glyndŵr University Northop

Attached to the Glyndŵr University Northop Campus is Llŷs Edwin, or Edwin’s Court. This is a site of a large, fortified residence, court or castle dated back to the mediaeval period, possibly eighth century. The significance of Llŷs Edwin together with Flintshire’s nobles is one of intrigue and political standing in Welsh history.

The site itself was excavated in 1931 but since then, excluding diminutive interest, it has been neglected, over-grown and forgotten.

Current and ongoing communication and consultation with CADW has opened up the prospect of restoring a prominent heritage site. In doing this, Glyndŵr University is in a position to secure vital channels, amongst others, for robust durable sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and restoration, heritage and skills education linked to local and national history.

This is an exciting project for us here at Northop and has the potential to inform and educate communities, raise awareness of Welsh heritage and to sustain the site for future generations.

Historical Site

Work began in February 2011 at the site.

This is an exciting project has the potential to inform and educate communities, raise awareness of Welsh heritage and to sustain the site for future generations.

In the very near future, open meetings at GU Northop will be arranged, inviting and involving local enthusiasts and expertise to help progress and sustain the site.

With this assistance, consultation and historical research, GU Northop will provide visitor interpretation to inform and educate.

Additionally, within the GU Northop web page, a web link specific to the Llys Edwin site will be in situ to inform of developments and historical context.

Site manager Paul Lewis on behalf of Glyndŵr University said he would like to thank Sarah Pevely (Community Archaeologist), Siân Rees (CADW Ancient Monumets Inspector CBE) and Clwydian Range Archaeology Group for their hard work and assistance.

National Sporting Event at Glyndŵr University Northop

On 19 February 2011, Glyndŵr University Northop hosted the Welsh Athletics Association National Cross Country Championships.

The event was a huge success with competitors and spectators attending from all over Wales and beyond. They, along with event organisers were all very impressed with race courses, facilities and location.

Paul Lewis, site manager at Glyndŵr University Northop said: “We at Glyndŵr University Northop are extremely proud to have been chosen by the Athletics Association of Wales as host venue for this year's National Cross Country Championships.

"From feedback and conversing with attendees throughout the day, the event was hugely enjoyed by competitors, spectators and AAW organisers who at the same time enjoyed the beautiful rural setting of the campus.

"Not only are we a higher education facility but we at Glyndŵr University Northop will try and help to accommodate all kinds of community associations, potential developments and events on local and national scales."
