Arriving at Manchester Airport or Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Most students coming to the UK to study at Glyndŵr University will travel by air and arrive at either:

Generally speaking;

Liverpool airport is a base for the budget airlines of Ryanair and Easyjet whilst most scheduled airlines and charter operators (British Airways, Air France, etc) plus some other budget airlines (Jet2, Zoom, Flybe, bmibaby, etc) fly in and out of Manchester airport

When making your way from either Manchester or Liverpool airports by public transport the following advice may be useful.

  • Manchester airport has a railway station within the airport which links with all terminals via the ‘Skylink’ (allow approx 20 minutes from terminal to station). Travelling to Wrexham (Wrexham General station) you will probably have to change at Manchester Oxford Road and Chester. Journey time is approximately 2 hours. See also the The Trainline website for connections and times of trains. More information on schedules and cost, both for this and alternative transport can be found on the Manchester airport website.
  • Liverpool airport has no railway station but provides a good bus link (the Airlink 500 service) to the City Centre.  This operates every 30 minutes, Monday to Friday daytimes, and every half an hour during evenings and weekends. (January 2009). City Centre stops include Norton St Coach Station (for National Express connections) and Lime Street Station (for local, regional and mainline rail connections, including Wrexham General railway station) More information on schedules and cost, both for this and alternative transport can be found on the Liverpool airport website.

Clothing

The climate in the UK is changeable, with warm summers and cold wet winters. On average, temperatures range between -5 degrees centigrade in winter and 25 degrees centigrade in the summer. UK weather is highly unpredictable; it can be wet, cold and windy one day, and sunny, warm and calm the next day. If you are studying in the UK for a full year or more, we advise you to bring a range of clothing that is suitable for the changing weather conditions.

Students should ideally bring with them t-shirts/shirts, warm sweaters, a rain coat, trousers/jeans and a strong comfortable pair of shoes for the winter months. During the summer months of June, July and August you can wear a t-shirt outside as the temperature is reasonably warm. Clothing is reasonably cheap in the UK and you can buy suitable clothes from any of the many clothes shops in Wrexham, but make sure you bring extra money with you to do so.

Electrical equipment

Voltage in the UK is 240 volts and all electrical appliances use a 3-pin plug. Laptop personal computers are expensive in the UK; we recommend that you buy one in your own country and bring it with you to the UK if you want a personal computer in your student accommodation.

We recommend that you buy all other electrical equipment when you arrive in the UK.
