Our first visit to Summer School at Glyndŵr University in the summer of 2009 was a real success. From the very first day in the UK landing at Manchester Airport, right up to the day of our departure, we felt the special attention paid by the university to each student.
On the day of our arrival, we were picked up at the airport and taken to our accommodation in Snowdon Hall. The next day we were shown around the university and Wrexham and given all the necessary details about where we would be studying; shops and entertainment in Wrexham, road and rail links to other places in the UK. Everything was new to us.
Russian students don’t have enough freedom to boast international mobility due to reasons mainly of a financial and political nature. Nowadays, thanks to the policy of Glyndŵr University, Russians are welcomed in Wrexham as well any other overseas students. We hope that we all benefit from the contacts between our universities! We think these friendly relations will help future international projects. At the same time cross-cultural links reveal differences in the world and life-interpretation. Sometimes people find it difficult to overcome these differences enough to understand people from overseas. Nonetheless, we found the British open and hospital, supportive and polite, encouraging and loyal. Wrexham was truly welcoming.
We know that Britain is traditionally popular with foreign students. Glyndŵr University offers foreign students not only the opportunity to study abroad but a real cosmopolitan atmosphere. Studying here means good-quality teaching, challenging but interesting, flexible programs. The skills learn are industry relevant and the cross-cultural environment provides you with future international contacts. Staying here means excellent facilities, many friends from all over the world and of course, the unforgettable visits to many beautiful places in North Wales and the surrounding area.
Educational standards vary around the world. Studying at Glyndŵr University has given us a chance to compare educational facilities and possibilities in Russia and Wales. Some of the differences are the wider range of accessible facilities that are available in Glyndwr. The accommodation is more modern and there is an internet connection. The spacious and homely single rooms in Snowdon Hall have everything that you need, including up-to-date facilities in the bathroom and kitchen. Russian students appreciated the latest equipment that was to be found in the automotive and electronics laboratories, the aircraft hanger (with flight simulator!) and well-stocked library all located on the Wrexham campus.
What is great about Glyndŵr is that studying here meant more than innovative teaching that covers different subjects but also personal development. We were taken on various coach trips around North Wales and England and saw Welsh castles and beautiful scenery. We benefited from using our student cards to go to Liverpool, Manchester and Llandudno because we could use it for student discounts. We also went clubbing which was fun. We have enjoyed British life, broadened our horizons, shared multinational cuisine and had fun spending time with new friends from all over the world.
The appointments with Professor Brian Foxon (Director of International Operations), Richard Dover, (Head of Humanities), Dr Leila Luuko-Vinchenzo (Head of Second Language Center), Yuriy Vagapov (Senior Lecturer in Engineering) along with meeting Olga Edwards from the International Operations team resulted in working out future contacts between Glyndŵr University and universities in Russia. Togliatti State University is looking forward to developing links with Glyndŵr University on Sustainable Development because Samara region is in UN RCE. The similar scientific interests of our Universities in engineering, mechanics, electronics and humanities might lead to sharing ideas in international conferences in Russia and the UK and international projects. Our university is also interested in English training courses for our tutors, which will improve their communicative skills.
We are sure that our visit to Summer School at Glyndŵr University has opened new ways of co-operation between the UK and Russia. We are very grateful to Glyndŵr University for our brilliant summer experience.
