The Glyndŵr University experience

Kehinde Frank-Isewon - Nigeria

I study BEng (Hons) Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering.  I joined the course because most universities don’t do combined degree courses and Glyndŵr University does. It can also offer me a link to Airbus at the end of the year, one of the top global companies for my subject area. So far, I have been problem-free and I hope it remains that way!  As the saying goes, ‘anything built must have a solid foundation’, and I believe my solid foundation is my course. It’s going pretty smoothly.  My best advice to new students is don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. The people I have encountered in the university don’t bite. Two heads will always be better than one.  Start socialising with the people you meet at Glyndŵr; from this you establish a bond and you get to come up with unified and unique ideas. At the moment I’m concentrating on my degree. After that I am hoping to get trained to be a pilot which will enhance my future career. I am hoping for a voluntary job with Airbus so that I can have more insight on what is expected of me in my career.

I have nearly completed my masters degree, an MRes Polymer Science and Technology.  The materials research centre here is internationally recognised and this is what I am interested in.  An open mind is your greatest asset. It helps you to learn and make your stay wonderful. Be prepared for the reality of academic rigour! At first identifying African shops for local delicacies was difficult, but I soon found my way around the community and I also met some fellow Nigerians and other Africans who were able to help. The sports complex is a good place for many indoor games. The beautiful game of football is readily available. The school choir is also a good place and it’s nice to hear some of the singing in Welsh.  There is also an active night life.  If you like nature and its wonders, you are simply at home in Wrexham although Manchester and Liverpool are about an hour away. I would like to add further value and be relevant at home. A PhD and some industrial exposure would put me in a good position to do this. As you know, Nigeria is a growing economy and in need of experts in various fields.
