If you’re a national of a country outside of the EEA and wish to study in the UK, you’ll need to apply for entry clearance; special permission from the UK government which allows you into the UK to study. Tier 4 is the section of the immigration system that deals with student visas. There is further information and an application form on the UK Border Agency website.
Tier 4’s Points Based System (PBS)
According to the system, you need to score 40 points to be awarded a student visa.
Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies
- 30 points are awarded for having a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a UK Tier 4 Sponsor. Glyndŵr University is a Highly Trusted Sponsor, which allows us to offer courses restricted in other institutes. Our sponsor licence number is AGA39FYY8.
A CAS is a database record held on an online system between the university and the Home Office. It contains information about you and the course you’ll be doing here and is identified by a unique reference number. We’ll give you this reference number and a copy of the information we enter onto the online system to help you complete your application form.
- 10 points are awarded for proving that you have enough funds to support yourself financially whilst in the UK. This is also known as the 'maintenance requirement'.
When we assign your CAS, we’ll state how much of your tuition fees you have already paid. If you haven’t paid in full, you must show that you have the funds to do so, plus the cost of living expenses.
There is a useful points-based calculator on the UK Border Agency website to help you work out what your maintenance requirement is.
If you’re studying at masters level or above you may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate before you can apply for your visa. Your conditional offer letter will let you know whether or not this is necessary.
The ATAS certificate is issued by the UK Government. Typically it is for academic areas such as maths, science and technology. For more information and help applying, check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Be aware – it can take several weeks to obtain ATAS clearance so make sure you start the process as soon as possible.
